On Wednesday, June 19, the Community Development Student Trip Showcase event highlighted the profound impact of experiential learning through international trips. The event was held in three themed rooms: the Belfast Room, the Japan Room, and the India Room. Each room featured student presentations alongside items, decorations, photos, videos, and food representing the respective regions.
Belfast Room: Resilience and Community Work in a Contested Space
Students shared their experiences in Belfast, emphasising the unique context of community development in the city. The trip provided insights into intercommunity work and challenged students to reflect on their own cultural, religious, and political views. The emotional journey offered firsthand exposure to the efforts of individuals and organisations working towards peace in the city.
The presentations and discussion underscored the value of seeing community development in action, showcasing how people are making significant strides towards healing and progress despite diverse and challenging circumstances.
Japan Room: Hope and Innovation Amidst Disaster
The Japan Room provided insights into disaster-stricken Fukushima and the collective efforts to rebuild. Students discussed the stark reality of visiting disaster sites and the profound sense of hope and resilience observed in the local communities. The experience highlighted the importance of mental health projects and the community’s drive towards a sustainable future.
The transformative impact of seeing the aftermath of disasters firsthand was evident. Students were particularly inspired by the local initiatives turning grief and trauma into actionable hope, as well as beauty and resilience.
India Room: Challenging Power Structures and Building Relationships
The India Room showcased the vibrancy and complexity of community spaces in Delhi, highlighting intergenerational spaces for activities including yoga and dance. In their presentation, students highlighted the importance of building relationships and networks within local communities, which were essential for sharing research and enhancing community work.
Experiencing the sensory environment of Delhi was crucial for students' learning, and the openness and warmth of the communities taught invaluable lessons about resilience and community spirit.

Collectively, students stressed the significance of these trips in providing context and lived experiences that extend beyond traditional classroom learning. These trips enabled Community Development students to step out of their comfort zones and immerse themselves in real-world community development in action. The showcase emphasised the essential role of experiential learning in community development, inspiring students and attendees alike to engage deeply with global issues and experience a variety of inspirational and important work supporting resilience and positive change.
