Biography
Dr Jason L Brown graduated from Durham University with a BSc (hons) in Biomedical Sciences in 2014 before undertaking a research masters (MPhil) in Dental Microbiology at the University of Liverpool the following academic year. He completed his PhD jointly at the Universities of Glasgow and the West of Scotland in 2018 with a thesis entitled "Cellular Responses in Oral Health and Disease". Subsequently, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Glasgow Dental School in an industrially collaborative project with GlaxoSmithKline for 1.5 years and a National Biofilm Innovation Centre (NBIC) funded project for 0.5 years.
Jason became a research associate in 2021 on a Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) collaborative project with the Universities of Bath and Lancaster studying the potential use of plasma technology to combat wound-related biofilms. Jason became a lecturer in Oral Sciences in February 2022. He lectures on a wide range of courses, including the BDS, Nursing and Microbiology undergraduate courses, and plays a pivotal role in the running of the postgraduate taught Oral Sciences course at the University (https://www.gla.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/oralsciences/), whilst also being a primary and secondary supervisor to various PhD students.
Externally, Dr Brown is a member of several societies including the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Society of Applied Microbiology and International Association of Dental Research. He is also a principal investigator for the Glasgow Biofilm Research Network and an associate editor for the Critical Reviews in Microbiology journal.
Research interests
Dr Brown has an extensive research background in bacterial, fungal and interkingdom biofilm models relating to different niches within the human body including the oral cavity and the skin. He is also interested in investigating host-pathogen interactions at these mucosal sites using simple and complex organotypic co-culture systems.
