Biography
Stuart Gillespie’s core work has always been, and remains, interdisciplinary, especially as between Classics/English literature (reception, translation) and English/European literature (translation, comparative studies). Two recurrent points of departure for this work have been Shakespeare and the editing of manuscript translations. He has published on every period of English Literature from Chaucer to the late twentieth century, but is usually to be found somewhere between the start of the Renaissance and the end of the eighteenth century.
Stuart Gillespie was in 1992 founding editor of Translation and Literature (Edinburgh University Press), now the preeminent scholarly journal of literary translation in English. In 2000 he conceived and planned with Peter France the multi-volume Oxford History of Literary Translation in English (OUP, 2005-10), co-editing two of the volumes. A new series, Edinburgh Critical Studies in Literary Translation, has been appearing under his editorship (jointly with Emily Wilson) since 2015. It consists of monographs on translation as a literary and historical phenomenon; their subjects range, so far, from the early modern period to the twenty-first century.
In Shakespeare Studies his large-scale reference text Shakespeare’s Books: A Dictionary of Shakespeare's Sources was first published in 2001, with a second edition in 2016. This was followed by the essay collection Shakespeare and Elizabethan Popular Culture (edited with Neil Rhodes for the Arden Shakespeare, 2006). He has published numerous independent articles and essays on individual aspects of Shakespeare’s reading and cultural context. He has lectured and has held a visiting fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington DC.
In the field of classical reception he co-edited The Cambridge Companion to Lucretius (with Philip Hardie, 2007). His many essay-length contributions in this field focus on English verse translation, especially from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. He has conducted research on both sides of the Atlantic on manuscript English translations from ancient Greek and Latin literature, some of which is described in his monograph English Translation and Classical Reception: Towards a New Literary History (Wiley, 2011).
His most recent work has developed this research into a large-scale edited compilation of previously unknown translations found in extant manuscripts. These translations extend to a wide range of Greek and Latin verse (including drama). The hardback edition of Newly Recovered English Classical Translations, 1600-1800 (OUP, 2018) is augmented by a free-to-view online Annexe. Work on this collection was begun while he held a Visiting Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, and completed during his time as a Senior Research Fellow at the August-Herzog Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel.
