Biography

Sean A. Adams is a lecturer in New Testament and Ancient Culture. Sean began his academic career as a British Academy Postdoctoral fellow and is currently a British Academy Rising Star for Engagement Award holder. Additionally, as of 2015, Sean is a member of the British Academy’s Policy Development Panel.

In his research he seeks to understand the New Testament and contemporary Jewish literature in its wider literary and historical contexts. He is currently working on a monograph that looks at the different ways Jewish authors engaged with Greek literature and adopted Greek literary forms. This work will lay the foundation for his next project, which will investigate the way Jewish communities engaged with Greek literary education and will specific focus on Philo of Alexandria. Sean has also worked with ancient manuscripts and has published a few papers on the way that ancient scribes used paragraphs to divide the text.

Sean lectures on a range of New Testament topics, including the Historical Jesus, Biblical theology, individual books studies (e.g., Acts, Galatians), and introductions to the Bible. Sean has also supervised undergraduate, masters, and doctoral dissertations and would be happy to talk to students interested in studying all aspects of the New Testament, biblical theology, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, ancient manuscripts, Hellenistic literature, and Greek education.

Grants

2015-2016    British Academy Rising Star for Engagement Award (£10,000) 'The Future of Academic Publishing'. This project brings scholars (early and late career), members of the publishing industry, members of government who oversee university funding in the UK, and librarians together to talk about the future of this industry and its impact on scholarship and society. Topics would include: the future of the industry (e.g., open access, e-books), the role and function of the library, publishing, career advancement, government funding (REF), as well as a practical workshop for PhD students and ECR.

2012-2015    British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship (£235,288) 'Jewish Hellenistic Authors and Greek Literary Forms'. This project traces the diversity of ways Jewish authors interacted with Greek literary culture (e.g., authors, texts, literary forms). It argues that this engagement changed over time and with geographic locale and resulted in distinct literary adaptations.

2011    Social Science and Humanities Research Council (Canada) ($40,000) 'Ancient Genre Theory and Collected Biographies'. This project developed an emic theory of genre and applied it to the development of ancient biographies in the Classical, Hellenistic, and Early Roman eras.

Supervision

I am interested in supervising any work that attempts to situate the New Testament in its Graeco-Roman and Jewish contexts. I am also interested in Luke-Acts, Paul, Intertestamental literature, Philo, Josephus, Hellenistic Judaism, Septuagint use in the New Testament, and ancient manuscripts. Please contact me if you would like to discuss a proposal for postgraduate study within my areas of specialism.

Teaching

In 2015-16, I convene Level 2 'Texts and Cultures of the Bible', Level 1 'Introduction to the Bile for Ministry', and the Honours course 'The Historical Jesus'. I also part of the team that teaches Level 1 'Creation to Apocalypse' and the MLitt in 'Ancient Cultures'.

I have previously taught courses on ‘The New Testament in its Graeco-Roman Context’, 'New Testament Texts: Acts and Galatians', ‘Intertestamental Literature and the New Testament’, and 'Greek Exegesis'.
