Biography

Dr Carole Biggam is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow and Visiting Lecturer in the University of Glasgow, and a Life Member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a member of the Philological Society. She was the Director of the Anglo-Saxon Plant-Name Survey (ASPNS) from 1999 to 2016, and the archaeological bibliographer for the Cambridge University Press journal, Anglo-Saxon England from 1996. Dr Biggam has a first degree in British archaeology, a postgraduate qualification in English linguistics, and a Ph.D in Old English semantics.

Dr Biggam’s principal interest is the multidisciplinary study of Anglo-Saxon England, based particularly on the techniques of semantics and archaeology, and this has led to involvements in colour semantics, plant-names and building terminology. She is the author of three books on colour semantics, and editor of and contributor to three books on aspects of plants in Anglo-Saxon England. She is also co-editor of four volumes of PICS (Progress in Colour Studies) conference proceedings. In addition, Dr Biggam has published several articles on her areas of interest in academic journals and collections of essays.
