Burns Night 2023 - To a Mouse
Published: 25 January 2023
The University of Glasgow houses the biggest concentration of Robert Burns experts in the world. Here they celebrate Burns Night 2023.
For Burns Night 2023, the Centre for Robert Burns Studies' new co-Directors Dr Rhona Brown and Dr Pauline Mackay recite 'To A Mouse'.
There are echoes of Adam Smith's 'Theory of Moral Sentiments' in 'To a Mouse', making the poem a fitting choice for the University of Glasgow's Adam Smith 300 celebrations this year.
Adam Smith (1723-1790), considered to be the father of modern economics, was a former student and Professor at the University of Glasgow, and one of the most important figures of the Scottish Enlightenment.
'To a Mouse' was also voted Scotland's favourite Scots poem in a recent VisitScotland survey, with over a fifth of Scots saying this was the favourite one they learned as a child.
Happy #BurnsNight!
