Student placements and internships - information for employers

Industrial placements are a compulsory component of the Software Engineering undergraduate degree programme and are run over either ten weeks (summer placements) or one year (internships) depending on the degree path that the student chooses. The feedback from the employers has always been very positive, “they are already like one of the team”.

The work carried out by the student on a compulsory placement is assessed, so a member of our academic team can assist you in scoping a project that would both meet your requirements and suit the skillset of the student at this stage in their studies.

We would suggest that your company creates a tailored job specification and interviews each candidate in order to select the student that best fits your team. We have a central Computer Science page to advertise any opportunities and for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) we also offer access to our Internship Hub that is exclusively for advertising to University of Glasgow students.

All placement students are expected to be paid the living wage, please see the example for Singapore at the bottom.

Summer Placements (ten weeks)

After completing three years of study at the University of Glasgow, the BSc (Hons) students are asked to undertake a ten week industrial placement over the summer (normally beginning in June or July). During the placement, a member of staff from the University will visit your company to assess the student and meet with the student’s supervisor (normally 30 mins each meeting).

The students then come back to the University to complete their final fourth year of the BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering. Once back at University, the students complete a presentation about their placement and present a poster to share with the current third years. Staff from your company are very welcome to attend these sessions.

Internships (one year)

After completing three years of study at the University of Glasgow, the MSci Software Engineering students undertake a ten to twelve month industrial placement for their fourth year (normally beginning in June, July or August). This placement involves:

  • an initial visit from a member of staff from the University to assess the student and meet with the student’s supervisor (normally 30 mins each meeting);
  • the student creation of a joint research project proposal for their fifth year of their MSci (hopefully you can partner with the student to find a project that would not only be suitable for this, but also benefit your company);
  • the student completes a literature review that can be the basis of the project proposal;
  • the student participates in five one hour online meetings for all the students to share their experiences;
  • a final onsite visit from a member of staff from the University to assess the student and meet with the student’s supervisor (normally 30 mins each meeting).

The students will then return to University for their fifth and final year to obtain an MSci in Software Engineering with Work Placement. In October the students will present and have a poster for their placement to share with the current third years and people from your company are welcome.
