The challenge faced by Gaelic broadcasting in comparison with other minority language broadcasting, notably in Ireland and Wales, was discussed at a lively conference held at the University of Edinburgh on 16 March. Participants included politicians, civil servants, representatives of agencies and local authorities, BBC Alba leaders, programme makers, and a range of Gaelic language interests. In a plenary address, Philip Schlesinger spoke about the wide-ranging challenges and uncertainties facing public service media and how these needed to be factored into future strategies for Gaelic broadcasting. The conference was recorded by BBC Alba for future transmission.
