Philip Schlesinger gave the 40th anniversary opening keynote lecture at the Social Theory, Politics and the Arts annual conference, held this year at the University of Ottawa on 9-11 October.  In keeping with the conference's focus on the relationship between cultural research and cultural practice, Philip addressed the effects of the changing research economy on the research agenda and the practice of research, in particular pressures arising from knowledge exchange and demands for co-production.  He asked whether public intellectuality might offer a space outside the increasing constraints of the audit culture.
