International links
The School has links with numerous academic institutions around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution, the Freie Universität Berlin, the École du Louvre, the Universities of Oslo and Copenhagen and the University of Melbourne, among others. Our staff collaborate with colleagues at these and other institutions to carry on research projects and organize summer schools and other teaching activities.
Undergraduate students can study abroad for one semester or one year in more than 80 international destinations through the University’s Study Abroad programme.
SEMESTER OR YEAR ABROAD FOR UNDERGRADUATES: DESTINATIONS
About 30 of our undergraduates take part in the Study Abroad/Erasmus programme each year. The map below shows the destinations of our students in the past 3 years: Past Study Abroad Destinations
Please note, however, that potential options are not limited to the above destinations. Students choosing to study outside Europe can choose between more than 80 destinations through the University’s Study Abroad Programme. Within Europe, exchange through the Erasmus programme are subject-specific, and the subjects at the School currently have the following partnerships:
- History of Art: École du Louvre (Paris), University of Bonn
- Film and TV: University of Stockholm
- Music: Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, University of The Arctic (Norway), University of Oslo, University of Turku
- Theatre Studies: University of Stockholm, Freie Universität Berlin
If you would like to go on an Erasmus exchange to a European university that your subject area does not have an agreement with, but another subject at the University does, please talk to your subject’s mobility convenor – it might be possible, in certain circumstances, to release the space.
SEMESTER OR YEAR ABROAD FOR UNDERGRADUATES: TOP TIPS
- You need apply in semester 1 of your second year to go abroad in your third year (full year or one semester only). Dates and requirements will be posted on the University’s Study Abroad page.
- All of the undergraduate subjects at the School, as well as their Joint Honours combinations (e.g. MA Joint Honours in Music and Theatre Studies) support study abroad for either one semester or the full year. If you’re studying a Joint Honours degree with a subject outside the School, please check with them that they support study abroad too (most of them do).
- You are responsible for researching potential Study Abroad destinations using the Study Abroad programme’s destination map. The above list of past student destinations is meant for information only and does not include all the potential destinations.
- You should discuss your academic programme for your year abroad with your subject area’s study abroad convenor. When you select your courses for Study Abroad, you should consider the overall structure of your degree too: are there any compulsory courses in year 3, and if so, will you need to find an equivalent option while abroad or can you take those in year 4? Are there any courses in year 4 that you would like to take when you come back, and do they have any pre-requisites that you might need to complete while abroad?
