Biography

Professor Simon Kennedy joined the University of Glasgow in 2006, initially within the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health and latterly within the School of Life Sciences.

From a research and teaching role, Professor Kennedy moved to a more teaching-focussed role whilst still collaborating on research projects with colleagues within SCMH, College of Science and Engineering and external partners.

He co-ordinates Level 4 of the Pharmacology degree as well as three final-year options, one of which teaches in vivo skills to undergraduate students and is funded by a teaching grant from the British Pharmacological Society.

A member of the College Appeals panel and deputy Postgraduate Convenor for School of Life Sciences, he teaches at all levels on degrees within the School, as well as on the MBChB and BDS degrees and acts as an advisor of studies to around 40 undergraduate students.

At University level, Professor Kennedy serves as the Senior Senate Assessor for Student Conduct, is one of the elected Senate Asessors on the University Court, and sits on the the Education Policy & Strategy Committee, Finance Committee, Audit and Risk Committee, and the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) Committee.

An active member of the British Pharmacological Society, he serves on their Finance Committee and their awards committee, as well as being both an 'Educator Expert' on their Ambassador Scheme to promote the in vivo undergraduate curriculum and a member of the Education and Training Committee.

Other external academic associations include being part of the editorial board of two top-ranking pharmacology journals, an external examiner at two Russell Group universities, and treasurer of the Scottish Cardiovascular Forum.

Research interests

Research Theme: Vascular Diseases and Comorbidities

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and the control of vascular function with a particular emphasis on the effects of an enzyme known as AMPK within the PVAT and the vascular wall.

The effects of hypoxia on the expression and function of an enzyme known as Sphingosine Kinase (SK) and how this modulates vascular function.

The role of Connexins which allow communication between cells and how this affects vascular function within the pulmonary and systemic circulations.

Teaching

Dr Kennedy teaches primarily at levels 3 and 4 within the School of Life sciences but also teaches at level 1 of the MBChB and BDS degrees.

His teaching ranges from fundamental physiology of the cardiovascular system at lower levels through to research-led teaching on final year option courses at Level 4 as well as co-ordinating and contributing to a practical option course which teaches in vivo research techniques.

Simon supervises research projects in his laboratory for final-year students on Physiology, Pharmacology, and Human Biology degrees in addition to supervising post-graduate projects on courses, such as the MSc in Clinical Pharmacology and the MSc in Biotechnology and Management.

The projects offered to students are aligned to the research being carried out by PhD students and this often leads to students being co-authors on publications.
