Biography

Jenni is a Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine. She is keen to engage with other researchers across the University to collaborate on research projects which can help to make a meaningful contribution to improving the lives of older people.

Jenni completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Dundee, graduating in 2010 with Honours. She completed her intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow in 2008, studying in the Public Health Department. She completed her Foundation Training in the West of Scotland, before moving to the East Midlands to undertake an Academic Clinical Fellowship. This combined Core Medical Training with further research in Geriatric Medicine and the completion of an MRes in Clinical Sciences at the University of Leicester, focused on advance care planning in dementia. From August 2015-July 2018 she undertook a Clinical Research Fellowship, funded by the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre and the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh. Her PhD was awarded in July 2018, entitled ‘New care home admission following acute hospitalisation: a mixed methods approach’.

During her doctoral studies, she developed a collaboration with the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Analysis Division and established an ongoing health and social care data linkage research project evaluating pathways into care homes. The Understanding Pathways into Care homes using Data (UnPiCD) study, supported by Dunhill Medical Trust, provides novel insights into this lifechanging move.

From August 2021 Jenni took-up a NES/CSO Postdoctoral Clinical Lectureship, training on a 50/50 basis. This allows her to progress her programme of work around using and improving Scotland’s care home data, alongside clinical training.

During the COVID-19 pandemic Jenni has undertaken research into care home outbreaks of COVID-19 in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Edinburgh and Public Health Scotland. She completed the Listening & Learning study, interviewing care home staff to learn from their experiences managing COVID-19 outbreaks. She was a member of the Scottish Government Clinical and Professional Advisory Group for Care Homes and produced infographic and video resources for practice. In February 2022 Jenni undertook a commissioned research review for the Scottish COVID-19 Inquiry.

Jenni is a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health and Social Care Delivery Research funding committee.

Jenni is passionate about improving understanding of the needs of those living and working in care homes, enhancing access to health care and support.
