Mr Corey McAleese
- Research Assistant (Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health)
Biography
Corey McAleese is a Research Assistant at the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow. He completed his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh before undertaking a MSc in Experimental Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, the latter focusing upon cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He then joined the BHF 4-Year PhD programme here at SCMH and is currently finishing his PhD under the supervision of Professor James Leiper, Professor John Petrie, and Dr Laura Dowsett. His PhD project investigated heterogeneity in endothelial cell metabolism and its role in the development of diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications. Additionally, his PhD investigated the prognostic potential of retinal vascular geometric parameters (vessel width and network morphology) for cardiovascular disease risk in type 1 diabetes. His current role, since September 2024, is working with Dr Craig Lygate to investigate cellular energy metabolism in cardiac health and disease. Specifically, he aims to understand the regulation of the creatine kinase system in the ischaemic heart and the mechanistic role of homoarginine in regulating cardiac function.
Research interests
Research Theme: Vascular Diseases and Comorbidities/ Cardiac Diseases
Corey's research interests primarily include cellular energetics in health and disease. This ranges from vascular and endothelial metabolism in diabetes and aging, to cardiac function in chronic heart failure and acute ischaemia. Corey's research skills span a range of biochemical and molecular techniques assessing mitochondrial health and function.
