The Graduate School Higher Degrees Committee have agreed to awarded Dr Jithin Kuriakose the Joseph Black Medal & Alan Hird Prize for his PhD thesis Enhancing Mas1:ETBR interaction as a potential vasoprotective strategy to improve vascular function and reduce blood pressure in cardiovascular disease.
The medal is awarded annually as the highest distinction for excellence in a PhD thesis submitted by a non medical/dental graduate. In addition to the medal, he will receive a prize of £250.

Dr Jithin commented after receiving the prize "I am honoured to receive the 2024 Joseph Black Medal and Alan Hird Prize, and this is a true reflection of the great project and supervisors I had at Glasgow. I would like to thank my PhD supervisors Prof. Rhian Touyz, Prof. George Baillie, Dr Augusto Montezano and Dr Delyth Graham for the first-class supervision during the project. I would also like to thank Dr. Sheon Samji, Mrs. Wendy Beattie, Touyz and Baillie lab members and animal unit staff for their guidance with the PhD project. I was greatly inspired as a young student during my time at SCMH to have the opportunity to learn from world leaders in cardiovascular research and having the privilege of finishing my PhD by shadowing Prof. Naveed Sattar in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He inspired me to study medicine afterwards (which I am currently doing) and follow his footsteps of becoming a world leading clinician-scientist. I would like to conclude by acknowledging the help of all the staff and graduate students at SCMH and MVLS Graduate School during the PhD”
