The Stroke Association Senior Lectureship will support Alan to deliver his research programme that aims to develop innovative ways to prevent AF-related strokes.

The OASIS study is a prospective, within-person comparison study assessing the role of using the blood biomarker NT-proBNP to guide selection of people for prolonged cardiac monitoring to screen for AF after stroke. An enriched sub-study will assess the role of a smartwatch for prolonged cardiac monitoring after stroke.

The ASPIRE study will analyse data from the Generation Scotland cohort to develop a risk prediction model that can guide AF screening in the general population. Evaluation of healthcare economic impacts are integrated throughout the research programme, through collaborations with Dr Robert Heggie in the Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment Group. The findings from the research programme will have strong potential to help optimise the prevention of AF-related strokes.
