Professor Naveed Sattar has been appointed as the UK Government’s new Obesity Mission Chair. In his role, Naveed will lead UK efforts to explore how promising innovations can be accelerated to improve long-term health outcomes for people living with obesity. In his role as chair of the Obesity Mission, he will also ensure the UK is a world-class location to trial, pilot, and roll out medical innovation.

The Life Science Vision (2021) outlines five sets of healthcare Mission Chairs that will drive progress and innovation to address the most pressing healthcare issues facing the UK and the world – with other Chairs focusing on mental health, addictions, dementia, and cancer. Professor Sattar’s role is one of those five sets of Chairs.

Professor Sattar is contributing expert input and leadership to the development of a Phase 2 pre-license platform to accelerate pharmaceutical and digital innovations for obesity in partnership with the National Institute for Health and Care Research. Moreover, Professor Sattar will oversee the research evaluation of NHS England's recently announced obesity pilot projects, which aim to generate high quality evidence for testing service delivery models outside of hospitals so that patients living with obesity can have access to the most effective and newest obesity drugs.
