The start of the kiltwalk

Here we go again!

On the 28th April, some of our researchers walked the 23-mile Mighty Stride from Glasgow Green to Balloch, Loch Lomond. Starting at 10.00am, Dr Martin McBride, Ms Cara Trivett (post viva, corrections finished and submitted) and her partner Jamie lined up on the starting line.

Martin McBride and Cara Trivett

In past years the Glasgow BHF researchers were kitted out with snacks, pain killers, toilet roll and plasters – others just rocked up with a water bottle and a free coffee that they collected on their way in. However, this year there was simpler fare although there was a major addition of whiskey. It was drunk in small quantities for medicinal use only, but was very welcome. Maybe slightly unhygienic as we shared the hip flask, but after a few miles that didn’t seem to matter. Once we started, there was good chat, a bit of a laugh, and the whiskey helped.

Kiltwalk 2024

We fired through the first 15-miles, with good chat and high spirits encouraging them along their way and no blisters! The weather wasn’t completely on our side, but lucky for Dr Martin McBride, there was whiskey as well as support from Cara and Jamie. Jamie who was carrying an extra 3 litres of water just in case and for fun. Well prepared that man!

Towards the end of the Mighty Stride I was flagging, but there was still some whiskey. Another Kiltwalk completed, same again next year?
