Godfrey Smith has been elected into the European Academy after a competitive membership election process. After nomination and following the recommendation of the appropriate Academic Section and a peer review by the relevant Class Committee, the Board of trustees has confirmed his election in early June.
The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988, on the initiative of the UK's Royal Society and other National Academies in Europe. It is a `Not for Profit' Charity registered in the UK. The Academia Europaea is the only Academy with individual membership from the Council of Europe states and from other nations across the world. The members, some 6000 currently, are eminent, individual scientists and scholars, who cover the full range of academic disciplines (see: www.ae-info.org). The Academy organizes meetings and workshops, provides scientific and scholarly advice and publishes the international journal the 'European Review' and is associated to Biology Direct.
