The Freeman lab attended this year’s Physiological Society annual conference in Harrogate, Yorkshire, July 10th -12th. This was a rare opportunity for all lab members to participate in the same conference, given the diversity of our research which ranges from studies into HDL composition and function, to adipose tissue dysfunction in complicated pregnancies and in critical care and models of placental dysfunction in preeclampsia. Dilys Freeman was an invited panel member for a training session discussing successful strategies for funding human research, while Sol Olivera gave a very well-received talk entitled “Cardiovascular effects of in utero Angiotensin II exposure in a rat model of superimposed preeclampsia”. Jack Beazer and Zoë Lees presented posters describing HDL composition in Europeans compared to South Asians and adipose tissue fibrosis in preeclampsia respectively, while Max Ralston took part in a clinical briefing discussing ways to bridge the gap between clinicians and basic scientists. Fiona Jordan particularly enjoyed sessions describing new techniques, including using serum in cell culture models, and networking with fellow technician delegates. It was also fantastic to bump into and catch up with our fellow SCMH staff and students Gabbie Gerganova, Eilidh Macdonald, and Anas Dighriri. Our trip wasn’t all work of course; we had a great time exploring the sights and (watering holes!) of York and Harrogate and enjoyed an excellent conference dinner. All in all, a thoroughly rewarding week!
