Dr Laura Dowsett in collaboration with Professor James Leiper has been awarded a 3 year British Heart Foundation (BHF) project grant (£286,456) to investigate ‘Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) signalling via the Calcium sensing receptor in cardiometabolic disease’.
Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an amino acid that all cells produce all of the time. However, having too much ADMA can put you at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure or having a stroke. Therefore, it is important to understand how ADMA interacts with the cells found in blood vessel walls and how it may alter their behaviour.
This project will investigate a new molecular target for ADMA known as the Calcium sensing receptor, and help us discover whether this is a potential target for developing new drugs to treat cardiovascular disease.
