Shaima Riha

We would like to welcome Shaima Maliha Riha to SCMH.

"I'm Shaima Maliha Riha, a dedicated researcher with a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology and a Master's in Stem Cell Engineering for Regenerative Medicine. Currently, I'm embarking on an exciting journey as a Ph.D. candidate under the guidance of Professor Tom van Agtmael and Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez. While my work is situated within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, I am based at the Advanced Research Centre.

My research is focused on delving into the intricate relationship between extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and protein folding. Through a multidisciplinary approach, I aim to uncover how varying ECM stiffness impacts cellular processes. This involves utilising hydrogels with different stiffness levels to simulate diverse ECM environments and studying their effects on cellular responses.

One of the highlights of my project is applying these findings to cells carrying collagen mutations associated with vascular diseases. By meticulously analysing the interplay between ECM stiffness and cellular defects, I hope to shed light on potential therapeutic strategies for these conditions."

We wish you all the best with your studies.
