Mhairi Copland, Professor of Translational Haematology and Honorary Consultant Haematologist has recently taken over as Director of the Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and Head of Experimental Haematology Section. She graduated in Medicine from Aberdeen University in 1996 and moved to Glasgow as a Clinical Trainee in Haematology in 1999. She obtained a PhD in Cancer Sciences from the University of Glasgow in 2007, and was appointed as Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 2008.
She has clinical and research interests in chronic myeloid leukaemia and acute leukaemias and is currently chair of the UK NCRI CML Subgroup. Specific areas of research interest are leukaemia stem cells, novel, stem-cell directed therapies and studies of the leukaemic microenvironment. She is Chief Investigator for the Phase 1 MATCHPOINT clinical trial, the Phase 2 TASTER trial, co-Chief Investigator for LI-1 and local principal investigator for several acute leukaemia trials. She also leads the Bloodwise Trials Acceleration Programme at the Beatson. Her main sources of research funding are Bloodwise and CR-UK. Mhairi has taken on the role as Lead for Experimental Haematology under very tragic and difficult circumstances, following the untimely death of Professor Tessa Holyoake last year. She is absolutely committed to supporting the staff and maintaining the international reputation of the Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and strengthening links with the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre and Beatson Institute.
