TEAM SCIENCE In the 2020s - Progress and Barriers

Science traditionally rewards and recognises individuals/principal investigators – but what about the PhD students, Post-docs, technicians, statisticians, bioinformaticians and project managers that are essential to the success of these teams? As we undertake more collaborative research, we must reward not only individuals, but also the team players.

This recognition is slowly filtering through to funders and employers. Pioneering funders are losing interest in impact factors, instead preferring researchers to summarise the impact of their top five (impact factor free) outputs and their personal contributions to these. Also, in support of team science, is the introduction of collaborative funding schemes which assess and fund teams of applicants rather than single PIs. Skills/technical specialists are key components of research teams but structured career paths comparable to the ‘PI’ track are rare.

A paradigm shift towards recognition of the team nature of science is occurring, which hopefully will lead to a more inclusive, collaborative, diverse and productive research environment. However, much still needs to be done. We were delighted to welcome Professor Anne Ridley FRS FMedSci, as our invited speaker to the MVLS Women in Research Network in May 2020. Anne served as Chair the Academy of Medical Sciences’ 2016 Team Science report which focused on how to improve the recognition of scientists involved in team science projects.

Please find a link below to a recording of the event. It provides an overview of Team Science and an open discussion on the opportunities and potential pitfalls of this new approach.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2020

The ICS Athena SWAN V.O.I.C.E. Committee/BICR IWD 2020 Organising Team organised a week of events to celebrate inspiring women. The events were held in the week preceeding 8th March 2020 to lead up to International Women's Day.

We had an interactive gallery of women that inspire us as well as a special journal club on challenges women face in STEMM with Dr Julia Cordero and Prof Laura Machesky. We managed to raise £450 for Scottish Womens Aid and £120 for the Australian Bushfires with Bakesales (thanks for all the yummy treats). Another highlight of the week was our Seminar with Professor Josephine Bunch (NPL Fellow in Biomolecular Analysis and leader of the CRUK Grand Challenge Rosetta team) and Dr Diego Benedict Baptista (Diversity and Inclusion Adviser on Research Culture, Wellcome Trust) exploring the changing research culture and how this intersects with equality and diversity, followed by a lunch discussion.

The event was chaired by Dr Chris Halsey.

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and we want to thank everyone for their contribution and the great discussions!

WIRN workshop on Staff Mental Health and Wellbeing

27 February 2019 - WWCRC Seminar Room

Programme:

Dr Maria Gardani: Are you losing sleep? Struggling to achieve a good night’s sleep can affect your physical and mental health and your overall quality of life. Get some tips on how you can improve your zzzz’s to feel better and look better.

Prof Lawrence Barsalou : This section will cover the psychological mechanisms that produce stress, an overview of strategies for working with these mechanisms, including a brief introduction to mindfulness.

Dr Maxine Swingler: The Yoga session will demonstrate a few very basic yoga poses using the chair to help with stiffness associated with desk work.

Dr Chiara Horlin: Dance and circus skills have all the obvious health benefits of participating in any physical activity. Whether you want some ‘me time’ or like to spend time with others, an alternative type of fitness can help develop unique spatial skills, new social circles, and introduce you to diverse and inclusive communities outside of academia. Experience the physical expression of pure joy and tomfoolery with some 1960s go-go dancing and a killer playlist, and challenge yourself to learn some new circus tricks to impress at parties. Chiara will be joined by Scott Craig for the introduction to circus skills. Scott is Head Coach at Aerial Edge and studied Formateur en Arts du Cirque at Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal.

Format: We encourage active participation, so please wear comfortable clothing. However, the sessions are structured to cater for all abilities.

#MedSci LIfe

It’s not all about work. A life outside science is not an extra, but an integral part of who we are as researchers. #MedSciLife brings together personal stories of those working in medical and health research to promote different working practices and explore how passions and achievements outside work can influence careers. medscilife.org/
