"How researchers in management and organization studies use interview data to make knowledge claims ”
Thursday 14th November, 15:00 - 16:30
Adam Smith Business School 588AB

Abstract

Qualitative interviewing is the most prevalent qualitative research method used in our field.
However, there is no one best way’ of conducting or writing up a qualitative interview study (see
Reissner & Whittle, 2021).
In this workshop, I will talk about the different ways that researchers in management and
organisation studies make knowledge claims from interview data. I will explore the different
kinds of claims that researchers make using their data – and the different types of theories they
develop as well - based on the paradigms (ontology and epistemology) that underpin their
approach to research.
I will also share some examples of published journal articles which use qualitative interviews as
evidence to explore what these different types of knowledge claims are and why they are so
different.
The seminar is designed to be helpful to (a) PhD students and early career researchers who are
conducting qualitative research, (b) researchers at any stage in their career who have (or plan
to) conduct qualitative interview research.
This talk is based on a recent methodological publication in the British Journal of Management
by Professor Andrea Whittle and Professor Stefanie Reissner:
