Virtual case competition hones career skills

Business School students took part in a virtual business case competition set by restaurant and pub operator Mitchells & Butlers recently. The event gave students, working in teams of four, the opportunity to put into practice their academic knowledge and find solutions to a current real-life business problem.

The event gave students, working in teams of four, the opportunity to put into practice their academic knowledge and find solutions to a current real-life business problem.
Students were able to practice different strategies and take risks in a controlled environment to experience consulting or advisory work and feel what a career in consulting or advisory work may entail, the pressure, the dynamic and the high level expected.
Each team’s recommendations and solutions were presented and judged by a panel including Business School alumni David Gallacher from Mitchells & Butlers; Sophie Hanlon from STR; Joanna Macleod from American Express Business Travel; Kayla Andrews from WheelAir; Euan Cameron from Willo and EAC Digital; Gerry McCusker from dogdigital and Graeme Crombie from Matrix Business Growth Consultants.
Undergraduate Andy Kot from the winning team said, “I have learned more about how to set up strategy planning, and through the competition I have met some great teammates. This experience made me realise teamwork is the most important core for success.”
This kind of event enables School students to benefit from the real life experience and knowledge of alumni, preparing them with skills for their future careers.
MBA alumni Graeme Crombie, owner of Matrix Business Growth Consultants who was one of the judges said: “The case study itself, although challenging, really provided the opportunity for the teams to gather relevant research material, conduct some meaningful analysis, and present practical solutions. All of the teams seemed to have been thoroughly engaged by the business challenge and all made very different and interesting recommendations.”
