The School recently held an outreach day for young people, focusing on the role of economics in society. More than 350 young people from 25 schools across Scotland, including those from as far as Aberdeen and the Highlands, participated in the event.

The day kicked off with an active learning session led by colleagues from the Scottish Government, followed by an engaging speed-networking activity where students interacted with professional economists from various industries, Business School alumni and current students. The day concluded with the Annual Public Lecture of the Royal Economic Society, delivered by Professor Jane Humphries (LSE) on the topic ‘Do Economists Care?’.

Feedback from both pupils and teachers was overwhelmingly positive. One teacher noted the importance of such events for their students, many of whom are "first in family" to consider university education or careers in knowledge sectors.

Dr Tanya Wilson, the event organiser, emphasised the goal of the annual outreach day: “The Adam Smith Business School aims to increase exposure to economics among school students in Scotland, where only a minority of secondary schools offer it as a subject choice. Our event seeks to fill this information gap and attract greater diversity among our economics students.”

The outreach day has grown significantly since its inception in 2022, now attracting schools from across Scotland, demonstrating the increasing interest and importance of Economics education among young people.
