We are delighted to welcome Christos Staikouras, Minister of Finance for Greece, as a guest speaker for our 2022 Distinguished Speaker series. With a wealth of experience handling unprecedented challenges in the Greek economy, he will provide valuable and unique insights into: the design and implementation of the ambitious reform plan in the Greek economy to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth, the national and collective EU policy response and achievements of the government in the face of unprecedented global shocks during the Global Covid-19 pandemic, energy crisis, and War in Ukraine, and the institutional progress to date but also the challenges that remain in the European architecture and institutional responses as the EU is gripping with the economic and social consequences of the latest global shocks. Also joining us will be Michael G. Arghyrou, Chief Economist and Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors of the Greek Ministry of Finance.
The event is open to all and will include a Q&A session.
Christos Staikouras, MP, Nea Demokratia, has been a member of the Hellenic Parliament for Fthiotida since 2007. He has held the position of Minister of Finance since July 2019. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the Management School, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, and a Doctor’s degree (PhD in Banking) from the Department of Banking and Finance, Cass Business School, City University, London. He is currently an Associate Professor in Finance at the Athens University of Economics and Business and has published over 50 research papers in international refereed scientific journals, books and monographs. He has held positions with the Bank of England and Eurobank Group and has participated in many scientific international conferences.
Michael G. Arghyrou, Chief Economist and Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, is a graduate of the Department of Economics of the Athens University of Economics and Business and holds a Master's and Doctoral Degree in Economics from the University of London (Queen Mary). He is currently a Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Piraeus. His main research interests are international monetary relations, international macroeconomics and the Greek economy. He has carried out research consultancy on the European sovereign debt crisis on behalf of the European Commission and the European Central Bank. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute of Democracy in Athens, a member of the research network of the Munich CESifo Group and a member of the Julian Hodge Institute of Applied Macroeconomics.
