2024 INSPIRE Research Forum
8th Annual INSPIRE Research Forum!
Many congratulations to the School’s VetGEMS Committee on the hugely successful INSPIRE Research Forum which was held on Wednesday 13 November 2024. Dr Ronan Fleming BVMS DipMath PhD delivered this year’s keynote address and opened proceedings with a presentation entitled ‘Navigating from Glasgow Veterinary student to a permanent research-intensive faculty position’’. Students who undertook research over the summer months then had the opportunity to present their findings during oral presentation sessions. The quality of talks was of an exceptionally high standard, all of them well prepared and interesting, and the breadth of research was equally impressive.
In a strong field, some outstanding presentations were unlucky to miss out, but many congratulations to all the winners:
First Prize – Rylyn Koger
‘Assessing pathological findings in bycatch cases of stranded Phocoena phocoena in Scotland’
Second Prize - Áine O’Brien
‘Validation of Brix refractometer to estimate Immunoglobulin G (IgG) in porcine colostrum’
Third Prize – Anastasia Shumitskiy
‘Evaluation of the pacing-walk as a marker of neurological disorders in dogs’
Poster Prize – Sora Ogawa
‘Characterizing high-fidelity feline calicivirus polymerase mutations: Pathway to safer vaccines’
9th INSPIRE Conference 2025
Our next big event will be the Scottish INSPIRE Conference on Saturday 8 March 2025.
Oral presentations will be delivered by veterinary and medical students from Glasgow and Edinburgh, medical and dental students from Dundee and Aberdeen and medical students from St Andrews. Students who delivered the top two research projects from each university have been invited to present and there will be a poster session over a sandwich lunch in the Mary Stewart Building. The keynote speaker at the conclusion of proceedings will be Professor Dom Mellor whose presentation ‘Not all those who wander are lost’, will be the perfect inspiration for undergraduate students who are interested in research, particularly in One Health.
The conference is free and is open to all students – undergraduate and postgraduate – and staff across all disciplines. It will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about potential research projects and discover how you can get involved.
Refreshments will be available at the end of the symposium and there will be the opportunity to network with students and experienced researchers across disciplines.
