Professor Rory Putman's current work as a consultant largely involves advising in both the private and the public sectors on management and resolution of wildlife conflicts.

Given the significance of deer and other grazing animals as, commonly, the most significant shaping force in the ecological dynamics of so many ecosystems (especially those in the Scottish uplands), much of this work inevitably concerns analysis and management of the impacts of deer on agriculture, forestry or conservational systems or effects of deer on other interests (vectors of disease, involvement in road traffic accidents etc).

He has published 12 books and over 100 technical articles on deer, their behaviour and ecology, their impacts on natural and semi-natural systems, and on management.
