Biography

I am internationally recognised for my research on the formation, structure and mechanical properties of eggshells. Over more than 30 years, my work has delivered sustained advances in understanding how biological, environmental, genetic and management factors interact to determine eggshell strength, integrity and safety, with direct relevance to both science and industry.

A defining feature of my research has been the integration of fundamental biology with applied outcomes. I have made significant contributions to the field of eggshell biomineralisation and ultrastructure, alongside pioneering work on the physiology of cuticle formation and its role in protecting against bacterial contamination. My research has helped establish the cuticle as a critical determinant of egg biosecurity and has informed strategies to enhance this natural defence across the laying cycle.

Central to my contribution has been the development of novel tools and methodologies to assess eggshell quality. These include non-destructive approaches and molecular strategies that enable traits previously difficult or prohibitively expensive to measure to be incorporated into breeding and management decisions. This work has opened up new opportunities for genetic selection and has contributed to measurable improvements in egg strength, reduced breakage, and enhanced food safety.

My research has been highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. Through participation in major UK-wide and European research programmes (11 grants since 2001), I have worked at the interface of anatomy, genetics, nutrition, physiology, microbiology and engineering. These collaborations have ensured that my research not only advances scientific knowledge but also shapes industry practice. I have worked closely with the egg inspectorate, breeding companies and producers to translate research findings into practical, implementable solutions, influencing both policy and production systems.

In recognition of my contribution to improving egg quality and safety for human consumption, I was awarded Honorary Associate status by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2020.

I have also contributed extensively to leadership within the poultry science community. I have served as an elected member of the UK branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association (2016–2024) and as a Council member of British Poultry Science Ltd for over 15 years. At an international level, I have represented the UK in Working Group 4 of the WPSA European Federation for more than a decade, and, as Chair, I led the organisation of the EGGMEAT2017 conference in Edinburgh, bringing together global expertise in egg and meat science.

Alongside my research, I have made a sustained contribution to veterinary education and research-led teaching. I have led major curriculum development at the University of Glasgow and supervised a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students. In my current institutional leadership role, I shape curriculum strategy to ensure education remains research-informed, future-focused and globally relevant. I am currently an external examiner at the Royal Veterinary College, London, and the University of Edinburgh.

I continue to extend my research into new areas, including the genetic and cellular basis of oviparity and viviparity in reptiles, ensuring ongoing innovation and cross-disciplinary impact.
