Dr Matias Perez

  • Newton International Fellow (Host-Parasite Interactions & Pathogenesis)

Biography

Dr Matias Perez is a DVM from Argentina interested in how parasitic helminths modulate the host environment to prolong their survival. During his PhD in Veterinary Medicine at Buenos Aires University, he studied parasitic helminth microRNAs (miRNAs), focusing on tapeworms of human and veterinary importance. He evaluated miRNAs as potential new chemotherapeutic targets of neglected diseases.

In 2021, he joined the University of Glasgow as a Royal Society Newton International Fellow to examine the effects of helminth miRNAs on host cell gene expression. Here, he was trained and examined parasite-host cell interactions in gastrointestinal (GI) organoids, three-dimensional ‘mini-guts’ derived from GI adult stem cells, that can be maintained in vitro and provide a physiologically relevant platform for studying GI diseases without the need for laboratory animals.

Research interests

My research focuses on how helminth parasite molecules, particularly extracellular small RNAs, can modulate immune response.

  1. Understand host-parasite interaction.
  2. Elucidate helminth modulation by secreting exRNAs.
  3. Develop new treatments for animal and human parasitic diseases.
  4. Develop innovative treatments for GI parasitic and inflammatory diseases using synthetic miRNAs.
  5. Therapeutic intervention using stable miRNA mimics or inhibitors.
