Spatial Ecology Group
Background
The Spatial Ecology interest group is a network of University of Glasgow researchers focused on measuring the distribution and abundance of organisms; understanding how underlying biotic and abiotic mechanisms determine these patterns; and applying novel statistical approaches to predict how organisms move and spread.
We combine tools such as GIS, remote sensing, isotopic analysis with field studies of individual tagged animals (such as GPS collars, geolocators, or GPS-GSM tags), camera traps, and contact-tracing through advanced quantitative modelling. The unification of empirical and statistical techniques in a spatial framework allows us to gain deeper insights into the population level processes occurring across landscapes. We apply these approaches to current issues such as fisheries management, epidemiology, ecology and applied conservation in geographic areas spanning Europe, Africa and South America.
