Umloda's PhD charts the history of Sudanese Cinema in three parts - archive, early filmmakers and the contemporary industry - and explores how resistance appears in Sudanese films and modes of production.

Umloda has interdisciplinary experience working for a range of artistic and cultural organisations, including theatres, media charities, and film festivals. Her interests, other than coffee and finding a good book to disappear into, are in reclaiming narratives that have been overlooked and championing authentic stories about the communities around her. She has a BA Hons in Interior Architecture and an MA in Global Cinemas where she wrote her dissertation on contemporary Sudanese filmmakers.

Her PhD will continue this research and chart the history of Sudanese Cinema from its origin to the present. The project is composed of three parts - archive, early filmmakers and the contemporary industry - and explores how resistance appears in Sudanese films and modes of production.

With the recent revival of Sudan’s film industry and being of Sudanese heritage, Umloda hopes this project will spotlight and honour the work of Sudanese filmmakers and to continue the conversation that began before the military coup of 1989.
