The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funds research and training in social and economic issues including issues of importance to business, the public sector and government.  The ESRC is an independent organisation, established by Royal Charter, but it receives most of its funding from the Government.  More information on the ESRC can be obtained from the ESRC website.

ESRC SCOTLAND DOCTORAL TRAINING PARTNERSHIP

The University of Glasgow is a member institution of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS), at the heart of the SGSSS is the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (ESRC DTP2). By combining the expertise of sixteen universities across Scotland, SGSSS facilitates world-class PhD research. DTP2 offers ESRC-accredited training in 6 challenge-led pathways.

From 2024, 14 of the 16 member institutions in Scotland are eligible to receive ESRC funding across 21 Units of Assessment (UoA). The qualifying UoA are different for each institution.  University of Glasgow can receive funding for studentships associated with the following UoA:

  • Architecture, Built Environments and Planning (C13)
  • Business and Management Studies - Economics (C17)
  • Business and Management Studies - Accounting and Finance and Business Management (C17)
  • Education (C23)
  • Geography and Environmental Studies (C14)
  • History (D28)
  • Law (C18)
  • Politics and International Studies (C19)
  • Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (A4)
  • Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care (A2)
  • Social Work and Social Policy - Sociology (C20)
  • Social Work and Social Policy - Criminology (C20)

The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science awards approximately 60 ESRC-funded PhD studentships annually across the Student-led Open Competition and the Supervisor-led Steers and Collaborative Competitions
