Biography
Paul completed a BSc (Hons) in Immunology as a University of Glasgow undergraduate and a PhD investigating the associations of inflammatory biomarkers with CVD under Prof Gordon Lowe at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Working with Prof Naveed Sattar, Paul was awarded a BHF Advanced Training Fellowship in 2010 and a BHF Intermediate Basic Scientist Fellowship in 2013, focusing on use of natriuretic peptides and other biomarkers of cardiac stress in the general population. Paul was awarded a distinction and the 150th Anniversary prize during an MSc in Epidemiology at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2014. He was awarded a Readership in 2019 and a Chair in 2023.
Research interests
Research Theme: Metabolic Disease
Paul's research work encompasses a wide range of epidemiological work investigating risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other related chronic and acute conditions.
In particular, Paul's work focuses on the use circulating biomarkers of health and disease to improve patient care. He leads the Glasgow Biomarker Research Unit (GlasBRU), and his team conduct a wide range of assays in blood urine and saliva samples including those performed in routine clinical biochemistry settings, and more specialised tests. He and his team have been involved in many seminal observational studies (such as British Regional Heart Study, Lothian Birth cohort, ALSPAC, and Generation Scotland) and clinical trials (such as DAPA-HF, DAPA-RESIST, DiRECT, STANDby, TARTAN-HF, T-TIME, CorMicA ,PRIZE, SUGAR-DM-HF and RECOVER-LV). They have access to a vast biobank of current and historical studies including WOSCOPS, PROSPER, and ADVANCE trials.
Biomarkers of special interest to Paul include cardiac biomarkers such as NT-proBNP and high sensitivity troponin. He has also been an active researcher in the UK Biobank resource.
