Biography
Dr Laura Dowsett is a Research Fellow at the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre. Laura first graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Pharmacology and Physiology with Industrial Experience (Drug Metabolism Group, Sanofi Aventis). Following this Laura joined the MRC Clinical Science Centre, Imperial College London where she completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr James Leiper. This research focused on understanding the role of the Dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) enzymes and the cardiovascular risk factor ‘ADMA’ in adipocytes and endothelial cells in models of diet induced obesity. Laura’s first post-doctoral position was based at UCL’s Institute of Ophthalmology investigating endothelial cell signalling and models of angiogenesis in retinal disease and cancer progression.
In 2017 Laura rejoined the Leiper Lab as it moved to the University of Glasgow. Here Laura continued to expand her previous work investigating the interaction between ADMA and the Calcium Sensing receptor. Laura is now developing her own research group, continuing her interest in the Calcium sensing receptor in cardiometabolic disease. Other current research interests include adipose-vascular crosstalk, endothelial cell heterogeneity and models of obesity and diabetes.

Teaching
As a Research Fellow the majority of Laura’s teaching comes in the form of mentoring BSc, MSc and PhD students through their laboratory-based projects.
Laura also delivers formal lectures for the MSc Cardiovascular Sciences course.
