Biography
Dr Jennifer Lees, MA (Cantab) MBChB MRCP(Neph) PhD FERA, is a Wellcome Trust Early Career Fellow and Lead for Data Science (School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, University of Glasgow) and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde). She graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh then moved to Glasgow to train in Renal and General Internal Medicine in 2013.
Dr Lees undertook a PhD at the University of Glasgow exploring the role of vitamin K supplementation in vascular health and disease among patients with kidney disease. She led the ViKTORIES trial (ISRCTN22012044; Kidney Research UK) and was a co-investigator on the K4Kidneys trial (ISRCTN21444964; British Heart Foundation). During a post-doctoral lectureship (Chief Scientist Office, Scotland), Dr Lees explored the relationship between chronic kidney disease using healthcare data. Using routine healthcare and trial individual participant-level data, Dr Lees is now investigating the role of kidney function in the selection, delivery, efficacy and safety of cancer treatments, and the influence on subsequent outcomes (Wellcome Trust, 2024-2029).
In 2022, Dr Lees won two prestigious awards for significant contributions to renal research as a junior investigator: the UK Kidney Association Raine Award and European Renal Association (ERA) Eberhard Ritz Award for Clinical Science, and was recognised as a “Rising Star” by the International Society of Nephrology. Dr Lees is an ERA Ordinary Council Member (2024-present); Visual Abstracts (2019-present) and Biomarkers/Formula Editor (2023-present) for Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation; lead for the West of Scotland Kidney Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement group; OurFutureHealth Research Scholar; an active member of the CKD Prognosis Consortium, UK Kidney Association eGFR group and UK Renal Trials Network.
Research interests
Research Theme: Cardiovascular Data Science
Dr Lees works within the Renal Research Team and is a member of the Cardio-Nephro-Oncology (CaNOn) Research Group. Dr Lees is interested in: using data science and clinical trials to understand and improve the long-term risks associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer; use of cystatin C for risk-stratification of adverse outcomes; sex disparities in the care and outcomes of people with CKD.
