Dr Carlos Celis

  • Research Fellow (School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health)

Biography

Carlos obtained his PhD in 2011 from the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow (UK). Following his PhD, Dr Celis was awarded a Postdoctoral Research position at the Human Nutrition Research Centre, Newcastle University (UK), where he co-led the Pan-European personalised nutrition trial, Food4Me. In 2015, he returned to the University of Glasgow, joining the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, and is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre.

Carlos' research interests focus on understanding the role of lifestyle behaviours, such as physical activity and diet, in the development of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cancer. To date, he has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers, and his work has been presented at numerous national and international conferences.

If you are interested in joining our team as a PhD student or visiting research fellow in one of the following areas, please get in touch:

  2. Nutritional Epidemiology
  3. The Role of Diet and Exercise in Survival for People with Long-Term Conditions

Research interests

Research Theme: Cardiovascular Data Science

Research Interests

-Physical Activity and Nutritional Epidemiology: This theme explores the patterns of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines, and dietary habits, and their relationship with the risk of developing long-term conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), dementia, cancer, and premature mortality. The focus is on analysing secondary data from large prospective cohort studies, establishing new studies, and collecting data at the population level. It also involves setting up dietary or physical activity trials to gain a deeper understanding of their impact on health outcomes.

-Physical Activity, Diet, and Survival in People with Long-Term Conditions: As the number of individuals living with chronic conditions continues to rise, there is limited understanding of how physical activity and diet can impact health, particularly in terms of survival and reducing the risk of premature death. This theme aims to generate new evidence on the relationship between diet, physical activity, and health outcomes in people with long-term conditions, focusing on how these behaviours influence mortality risk. The research involves analysing secondary data as well as designing and implementing novel interventions or trials to modify these behaviours and improve health outcomes.

Setting up new collaborations

Dr Celis is always open to requests for collaboration, either on cross-sectional or prospective cohort studies or interventions aiming to improve lifestyle behaviours. If you are interested in doing a research placement at our School or discussing a collaboration, please get in contact.
