Biography
Dr Judith Brown is Project Manager for two projects in the Complexity Programme, within the Schools and Educational Settings workstream at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit:
• The Schools Health and Wellbeing Improvement Research Network (SHINE).
SHINE aims to support schools in addressing their health and wellbeing needs by using a data-driven, systems-level approach to health improvement.
• The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Scotland Study.
HBSC is a World Health Organisation (WHO) cross-national study which aims to increase our understanding of young people’s health and wellbeing, health behaviours and social context. The first study was conducted in Scotland in 1990 and it has been repeated every 4 years since then, providing a unique insight into how health and health behaviours have changed over the last 30+ years. HBSC involves 50 countries across Europe and North America and therefore allows us to see how young people in Scotland are doing compared with young people in other countries.
Prior to this Judith project managed two MRC funded projects:
• The Sleep, circadian rhythms and mental health in schools (SCRAMS) project.
The SCRAMS project built on well-established links with schools in Scotland through SHINE to develop a UK-wide research collaboration focused on investigating sleep and mental health within schools. With input from pupils, parents and teachers, a programme of public engagement focused on sleep and mental health within schools was designed and carried out. A series of small-scale feasibility studies were conducted that helped us to design more comprehensive studies for the future.
• The Mental Health Data Pathfinder (MHDP) award.
The MHDP project aimed to enhance mental health data cohorts through linkage to health, education and administrative datasets. It investigated the overlap between mental and physical health problems and developed a programme of schools-based mental health research in Scotland.
Previously Judith was a Research Fellow in the Healthy Working Lives Group. Judith’s work focused on monitoring and evaluating the interactions and determinants of work and health and in particular the nature, dynamics and needs of the workless population.
Research interests
- Mental health data cohorts and schools-based mental health research
- Sleep, circadian rhythms and mental health
- Monitoring and evaluating the interactions and determinants of work and health
- Observing and understanding those receiving benefit for health-related worklessness
- Studying clients engaging in return to work activity as part of the Work Programme
- Sickness absence research
