Biography
Andrew Gumley is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council UK, and a Professor of Psychological Therapy. He is a leading international researcher investigating psychological interventions for people with psychosis. Andrew developed and evaluated the first ever randomised controlled trial of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for the prevention of relapse in people with Schizophrenia. Since then he has designed and lead randomised controlled trials of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in people experiencing a range of mental health difficulties including young people at risk of developing psychosis, and individuals who have psychotic experiences which have not fully responded to Clozapine. He has been at the forefront of developing and piloting third wave interventions for psychosis including Compassion Focussed Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Andrew has also undertaken extensive research into the the importance of fear of recurrence as a block to recovery in people with psychosis, and the importance of attachment as a basis for resilience and recovery. These research programmes have informed the design of complex interventions and the development of systems based interventions to enhance engagement and recovery. His research is funded by the National Institute of Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHRHTA), Chief Scientist's Office (CSO) Scottish Government, UK Medical Research Council, the Danish Institute for Humanities Research, and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Andrew was Chair of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network for Schizophrenia (2013). He is Visiting Professor at the Institute of Psychology, University of Copenhagen, Editor of the journal Psychology and Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice, Clinical Psychology Advisor to Bipolar Scotland, Strategy Board member of Scottish Recovery Network.
Research interests
Professor Gumley leads the Psychosis Research Group comprising Hamish McLeod, Kelly Chung, Jenna-Marie Lundy, Sara Beedie, Susan Irving, Suzan Aydinlar, Jackie McTaggart, Mairi Spanwick, Caoimhe Clarke, Suzy Syrett, and Ross White. He also provides additional supervision for 2 PhD candidates: Seonaid Cleare and Aliyah Rehman. The Psychosis Research Group conducts research into:
- Clinical trials of complex interventions for individuals with affective and non-affective psychosis
- Developmental, Cognitive and Interpersonal pathways towards risk, resilience, adaptation and recovery
- Developing integrated care pathways and models of service delivery and engagement.
Andrew's research is funded by the National Institute of Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR-HTA), Chief Scientists Office (CSO), Medical Research Council, the Danish Institute for Humanities Research, and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. His key collaborations include Tony Morrison (University of Manchester), Angus Macbeth and Matthias Schwannauer (University of Edinburgh), John Norrie (University of Aberdeen), Max Birchwood (University of Warwick), Susanne Harder (University of Copenhagen), Paul Lysaker (University of Indiana) and John Gleeson (University of Melbourne).
Here are some examples of current projects:
Compassionate Recovery: Individualised Support in early Psychosis (CR:ISP) Implementing improvement strategies based on an Integrated Care Pathway for Early Psychosis. The Psychosis Research Group evaluating the impact of routine assessment of service engagement as a trigger for psychological formulation to reduce coercion into treatment, enhance access to psychological therapy and improve recovery.
A Parallel group Randomised Open Blinded Evaluation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Depression After Psychosis: A Pilot Trial (ADAPT). The Psychosis Research Group is developing ACT for Post-Psychotic Depression as the basis for a large scale UK wide RCT.
Focusing on Clozapine Unresponsive Symptoms (FOCUS). The Psychosis Research Group is collaborating in a UK wide multicentre randomised controlled trial of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Clozapine unresponsive symptoms.
Wellbeing and Resilience: Mechanisms of transmission of health and risk in parents with complex mental health problems and their offspring (The WARM Study). The Psychosis Research Group is establishing a longitudinal cohort of pregnant women diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Depression and Bipolar Disorder as a basis to explore the unfolding of the mother infant relationship as a context for understanding developmental, interpersonal and attachment based roots of resilience and risk.
The Psychosis Research Group welcomes PhD enquiries. There are particular opportunities to develop projects around:
- Understanding Relapse and Recovery through exploring interpersonal processes, help-seeking and services engagement from service user, carer and staff perspectives
- Exploring issues of gender, sexuality and parenthood amongst service users diagnosed with schizophrenia and also amongst mental health staff
- Developmental and attachment mechanisms in infants of mothers with complex mental health problems
- Mechanisms of depression, emotional adaptation and suicidal thinking in psychosis.
Andrew continues to hold the belief that life exists outside work and can be found drinking red or white wine, adorning Lycra for Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club and sea kayaking usually off the Ayrshire coast.
