Information for Carers, Parents and Parents-To-Be
School of Cancer Sciences Family Friendly Information Pack (FFIP)
The School of Cancer Sciences encourages an open and family friendly working environment. This Family Friendly Information Pack (FFIP) page provides links to some of the resources that parents, parents-to-be and carers might find useful.
Further information for parents and carers can also be found on the University Equality & Diversity webpage
HR 1:1 meetings
We recommend to take advantage of the opportunity to have 1 to 1 meetings with the HR team that can be requested via email to the People & Organisational Development Team, the SCS POD Business Partner or via the UofG helpdesk. These meetings can provide additional assistance to fully understand university policies and how they relate to the individual's situation.
Staff members are encouraged to discuss any issues/requirements with their line manager as soon as possible, who will help ensure that the staff member is supported before and after their period of leave.
Maternity leave
The Maternity leave policy provides useful information on antenatal and postnatal care, Keeping In Touch (KIT) days and pay entitlement. Please note that there is no longer any requirement for a minimum service period in order to benefit from the University’s enhanced maternity leave packages.
The Maternity Policy toolkit is a particularly useful link, which lists the available support documentation including guidance, forms and checklists.
Paternity leave and adoption leave
The University provides support for other parental leaves besides maternity leave, including adoption leave, as outlined in the paternity and adoption leave policies. Please note that the University’s paternity leave policy includes 2 weeks fully paid leave.
Shared parental leave
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) may support a family to balance work and childcare commitments as it allows parents to share up to 50 weeks of leave within a baby or child’s first year following birth or adoption. Please consult the University toolkit for more information on this.
Carers leave
A carer who provides support to a dependent may have additional demands and needs, either in an emergency situation or on an ongoing basis. This page provides dedicated information on Carer Support, including information on policies, internal and external support. For other situations employees are reminded that the Institute supports flexible and part-time working, and these should be discussed with your line manager in the first instance.
Returning to work after family leave
SCS provides quiet, private facilities for breastfeeding and a dedicated refrigerator for returning women who wish to express breast milk at work.
For more information contact the SCS Head of Professional Services
Parking
The SCS has three family parking spots in front of the building to support pregnant women, elderly, those with temporary injuries or traveling with small children. Requests for temporary permits to use these parking spots can be directed to the SCS Head of Professional Services and through contacting the car parking department of the University of Glasgow.
Parental buddying scheme
The School operates a "Parental Buddying scheme" that intends to link both future and new parents to other colleagues who have been through a similar experience. For information or to be paired with a buddy please get in touch with the SCS parental buddy.
Student carers policy
Many resources exist at both School and University level that support students and employees with young families/caring responsibilities, such as described on the Carer Support webpages or through Student Carer policies and for Student Carers who wish to request special arrangements
SCS returners reskilling fund
The SCS provides funds (maximum £500) for networking, conference attendance (including cost of additional childcare) and re-skilling for staff members returning from maternity leave, adoption leave or extended parental leave. For details on how to apply please contact the Head of SCS Professional Services.
Workload relief options:
