Dr Andrew Mackillop is a senior lecturer in Scottish History. His research interests centre upon the integration of early modern Scotland into the English, and after 1707 British, Empire. Through the use of comparisons with Ireland, his research explores how older forms of military entrepreneurship and military emigration ‘globalized’ in the later seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries as both societies increasingly supplied manpower and officer elites for conflicts in North America, the Caribbean and Asia. An aligned interest is the development of the English East India Company’s armed forces from c.1740 to c.1820 and the use of monopoly corporations as a mechanism for imperial expansion.
