Tawona Sitholé: walk a milestone in my shoes
Published: 7 February 2025
Tawona Sitholé created poem in response to a series of listening conversations and gatherings with past event organisers of the Refugee Festival Scotland. The 2025 Festival theme, MILESTONES, emerged from those conversations.
The Scottish Refugee Council hosts an annual festival in June, to mark World Refugee Day (20 June) and to help shine a light on the cultural richness and diversity of our communities. It is a celebration of the food and drink, music and poetry, art, dance, language and ideas that people bring with them when they settle in Scotland.
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the festival, as well as the 40th anniversary of the Scottish Refugee Council. Reason to celebrate!
Over the course of 2024, the Scottish Refugee Council hosted a series of listening conversations and gatherings, open to anyone interested in supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland. The sessions were open and playful, aimed at generating ideas, but also at getting to know other people who have been involved in the Festival before. The stories that were shared and the ideas that evolved then fed into the planning of the festival for the anniversary special in June 2025.
The theme that emerged was: MILESTONES.
You can read the full poem that Tawona wrote, Walk a milestone in my shoes, on the Refugee Festival Scotland website. Also please head to the website if you would like to organise an event as part of the festival, if you are interested in volunteering or campaigning, or to come along just for fun.
