Hyab Johannes 

Hyab Teklehaimanot Yohannes is a researcher with the UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts at the University of Glasgow. His work involves conducting research and synthesising findings to provide insights into theoretical, methodological, and policy-related questions. Recently, Hyab co-edited a Special Issue on Intercultural Knowledge Production for the Journal of Language and Intercultural Communication. Additionally, he has signed a book contract with Routledge for his upcoming publication entitled ‘The Refugee Abyss’. Hyab’s research interests include decoloniality, cultures of peace, political theories, and (b)ordering (physical, onto-epistemic, spatio-temporal, juridico-political, etc.).

In April 2024, he recieved the prestigious June Almeida Medal from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). Dr Yohannes' citation recognises his academic endeavour and public engagement as a survivor of torture and trafficking amid challenges to the Refugee Convention.

His PhD was in The Realities of Eritrean Refugees in a Carceral Age from the University of Glasgow,  where he also held the post of academic coordinator for CUSP N+, a project that finished in 2023

In 2022, together with students at Leeds University, Hyab co-organised the extremely successful PGR-led Series "Decolonising Forced Migration". The presentations are available to view on the Decolonising Forced Migration YouTube channel.

Hyab has been named among 21 members of the International Survivors of Trafficking Advisory Council (ISTAC). ISTAC aims to help governments improve their anti-trafficking efforts and ensure they are focused on victims.
