Professor Margery McMahon

 

Margery A McMahon is a Professor of Educational Leadership and previously served as Head of the School of Education (2019-2023). With a background as a History and Politics teacher, she joined the School of Education in 2004 and played a key role in developing the MEd in Professional Development and Enquiry before becoming Head of the Department of Educational Studies. She is well known for her contribution to shaping the next generation of educational leaders.

In 2013-2014, Margery was seconded to the National Implementation Board for Teaching Scotland’s Future, where she spearheaded the scoping and initial establishment of the Scottish College for Educational Leadership. A prolific author, she has written and contributed to several seminal works on professional learning and leadership, including School Leadership (3rd edition, 2016) and various scholarly articles and book chapters, such as ‘Interrogating the concept of leadership at all levels: A Scottish perspective’ and ‘Teacher Leadership’ in Scottish Education (5th edition, 2018).

Margery is highly regarded for her expertise and frequently serves as an advisor and consultant to national and international agencies on leadership development and institutional capacity building. She has been a longstanding member of the St Andrew’s Foundation and has served on the Board of Catholic Education during her tenure as Head of School of Education.
