Catholics and Schools after the 1918 Education Act - A Symposium

We were delighted to welcome over 70 attendees from across the country to an afternoon symposium on the 100th anniversary year of the 1918 Education Act. The symposium was organised by the St Andrew's Foundation in collaboration with the Scottish Catholic Historical Association and the Glasgow Newman Association. The four keynotes were:

Robert Davis (University of Glasgow) “The 1918 Education (Scotland) Act and the European Crisis: Church, State & Society”

Diane Watters (Historic Environment Scotland) “Tradition and Modernity: Catholic School Architecture After 1918”

Stephen McKinney (The University of Glasgow) “The Church of Scotland response to the Education (Scotland) Act, 1918” and

Lindsay Paterson (The University of Edinburgh) “Integration or assimilation: the liberal effects of a Liberal Act”.

Sir Tom Devine convened the proceedings.
