University of Glasgow Eligibility Statement

The Catholic Teacher's Certificate (CTC) is the qualification required for those eligible* and wishing to teach Religious Education in Catholic primary schools or in Catholic secondary schools as a 'generalist' RE teacher. The Bishops’ Conference in Scotland state that ‘in light of Church Doctrine and current guidance from the Catholic Education Commission, the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland insist that, as a minimum requirement, the posts of…teacher[s] of religious education are to be filled by practising Catholics’. Working in partnership with the Scottish Government and the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, the University of Glasgow is responsible for the award of the Catholic Teacher’s Certificate and it is delighted to offer the qualification via a number of routes:

  1. Integrated into the MEduc at UofG
  2. Integrated into the PGDE Primary at UofG
  3. Integrated into the PGDE Secondary and UofG
  4. Taught in conjuction with the PGDE at the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, West of Scotland and also teaching programmes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
  5. Setting Out on the Road (for Qualified Teachers)
  6. CREDL – Certificate in Religious Education by Distance Learning
