Our interdisciplinary researchers—spanning psychology, linguistics, engineering, computer science, neuro-imaging, and computational modellingcombine rigor and realism to study and model the fundamental mechanisms of human social cognition, perception, communication and interaction, including testing their validity in explicit models of human-digital agent interaction. Our fundamental work in human social interaction informs fundamental AI research and its real-world applications.

Unique strengths

We develop and apply state-of-the-art methods to experimentally control and generate realistic, ecologically valid multi-modal social signals (e.g. generative models of the face, body and voice; Virtual Humans; real-time transformation of multimodal social signals; immersive VR environments). Using rigorous experimental designs involving specialist methodologies and analyses, our researchers derive formal computational models that represent the causal explanations of social cognition, perception, communication and interaction.

Key research questions (hypothesize-formalize-validate):

Hypothesize-Formalize

  • Social Interaction. How do human use coordinated, dynamic multimodal signals (face, body voice, language) to navigate diverse social environments (in ≠ cultural, social and physical contexts)?
  • Social Perception. How does the brain process these complex social signals for perception, decision-making and action?
  • Social Cognition. How do interpersonal and intrapersonal factors (culture, language, emotion, bias, disease, dysfunction) shape these processes?

Validate

  • Social Robotics/AI. How can we transfer this fundamental knowledge into “digital twins” socially interactive virtual humans and robots—to test and refine psychological theories in real-world settings, thus closing the hypothesize-test-formalize loop?
