SIPHER Wellbeing Calculator
Discover how wellbeing can be measured in monetary terms with SIPHER’s innovative Wellbeing Calculator.
Using responses to the SIPHER-7 Wellbeing Indicators—which include health, income, housing quality, and neighbourhood safety—the calculator employs an algorithm to combine these factors into a single, easy-to-understand index: Equivalent Income.
Equivalent income represents the overall level of wellbeing associated with different combinations of the seven wellbeing indicators (SIPHER-7). It is based on public preferences gathered from a large-scale online UK population survey, which asked people to weigh up trade-offs between income and different aspects of wellbeing. This approach captures how people value each indicator, enabling us to translate overall wellbeing—not just income—into a single, meaningful monetary figure.
This work is a key component of SIPHER’s decision models allowing us to compare the impact of different policies on wellbeing. Research like this is crucial for shaping public policies that improve wellbeing and reduce health inequalities across our communities.
