We study neural circuitry, and seek to understand how specific brain circuits allow us to comprehend and respond to our physical location and situation, to create and recall memories, and to make decisions, plans and predictions about the future. We study how spatial neurons in the brain map the surroundings, and how sensory information is assembled by the brain into complex, cognitive representations of the environment. We have a strong focus on corticothalamic circuits, and their role in sensory perception, in learning and memory and, when exposed to inopportune genetic and environmental influences, in the dysfunction underlying psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia. We also explore the peripheral and spinal mechanisms of the somatosensory and viscerosensory systems underpinning touch, temperature, pain, and itch sensations, and how pathological pain states arise from circuit dysfunction.
We investigate the regulation of synchronous neuronal network activity, how different brain and spinal regions coordinate their activity across long distances, how these connections can be dynamically modified through synaptic and myelin plasticity, how plasticity can be sustained through changes in gene expression, and how plasticity mechanisms might be exploited to improve functional recovery in clinical populations
Preclinically, we use a wide range of key neuroscience techniques, including two-photon imaging, patch-clamp and in vivo electrophysiological recordings, optogenetics / chemogenetics, regional and single-cell transcriptomics, genetic manipulations and behavioural analysis in transgenic animal models; while in humans we integrate techniques such as neurofeedback fMRI and electrophysiological recording during surgery, along with biomarker and technology development.
